Outside Corner begins with one of architecture’s most elementary structures: the meeting of two planes. Through geometry, tonal variation and contrasting textures, the painting transforms the corner from a fixed architectural element into an uncertain spatial condition.

The composition suggests volume without fully defining it. Planes appear to project forward and recede simultaneously, creating a tension between the flatness of the canvas and the illusion of an architectural space.

Materiality plays a central role in this ambiguity. Sand introduces a physical texture that contrasts with the controlled geometry of the composition, while shifts in light and tone continuously alter the apparent depth of each surface.

The corner therefore becomes more than a structural boundary. It operates as a threshold between surface and depth, interior and exterior, allowing a precisely constructed image to remain perceptually unresolved.
